This festival is predominantly celebrated in the state of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. The Ganesh Festival is the truly the most lively festival. For nearly 10 days the whole of the nation enters a cosmic trance. The early morning aartis, the maha aarti are the popular prayers amongst people. Several households, communities and organization bring home an idol of Ganesha that is then worshiped and offered special delicacies called ‘modak’ for a set number of days. The large variety of idols and the ‘mandaps’ is an artistic visual treat. Families and friends gather in auspicious unions. People step out for outings and visiting the popular and decorative Ganesh idols and decorations.

Cultural programs all around the cities are organized for youngsters and adults alike. The biggest spectacular is the ‘visarjan’ procession at the end of the 10 days. Visarjan is when the idol is submerged into a water body as a depiction of Lord Ganesha’s return to his heavenly abode.
